Volvo Penta is a Swedish company, part of the Volvo Group, a manufacturer of marine and industrial engines.
Penta was founded in 1907 in Skövde, Sweden, to develop the first marine engine, the B1. There are two versions of the origin of the name Penta. According to one version, five people took part in the development of the first engine. According to another, only the fifth set of drawings was approved for creating a motor “in hardware”. Penta engines quickly became popular. In 1927, Penta received an order to supply engines for the production of the first Volvo passenger car.
Volvo Penta has a dealer network of 4,000 companies in different parts of the world.
Among the company's innovations in the field of shipbuilding are the sterndrive and counter-rotating Duoprop propellers. In recent years, Volvo Penta has introduced a new propulsion system with drag screws and a joystick to control it.
